Kaufman County TX Convention photos and story

Sun Mar 30, 2008 at 10:48:51 AM PDT

I was selected to be an alternate for Hillary at our County Convention yesterday.  Thankfully I was not needed because I would have had to say that I now support Obama.  Since I wasnt needed, I was able to walk around with my camera.

I just went to my first caucus and now I have a headache

Tue Mar 04, 2008 at 07:26:58 PM PDT

No sensational stories here, just my take on the caucus and my thoughts on the election.  I live in Terrell, Texas, a town in Kaufman County, east of Dallas.  We had our caucus scheduled to start at 7:15 just like advertised.  We got there about 7:05 and took a seat. There were sign in sheets being passed around and we were told to fill it out when it came our way.

Living in Terrell, TX a year after Katrina

Sun Aug 27, 2006 at 08:34:58 PM PDT

I posted this at my blog, but wanted to share with the Big Orange.  I havent been kind to the Tribune, but this is one time where I can say they have done a great job.

Sundays Terrell Tribune has a series of stories about Katrina evacuees who have made Terrell their home. I know there are a lot of Katrina stories being written because of the anniversary but if you have a chance please read the stories on the Tribunes website and leave a comment if you like. Comments probably will be able to be added through Tuesday morning I hope. Each story is moving, Justin Jones has done an excellent job writing about each family.

My small town newspaper changes its tune

Tue Aug 22, 2006 at 08:32:41 AM PDT

I know this may not interest 99% of the people here, but I got a smile on my face today when I read my local newspaper.

On August 9th the online edition of the Terrell Tribune ran a story about a Town Hall meeting being held by Jeb Hensarling in Athens. I had a problem with the way the story was presented, and I wrote about it here. It was basically the press release from Hensarlings office reprinted in the paper. The story referred to the Senate Immigration Bill as the Reid-Kennedy bill, which is incorrect and directly taken from the press release. Well todays Terrell Tribune does all right by me.

Kaufman County Dems and Charlie Thompson for US TX-05

Sat Jul 22, 2006 at 04:24:16 PM PDT

We had our Kaufman County meet up today in Forney, TX. It was fun, being able to speak to people who think like I do. There were probably about twelve or so people there. It was really a way for our County Chair to let people what can be expected, and to get ideas on how to get more exposure for our candidates.

Bear Gleason was there, he is running against Betty Brown for State Rep Dist 4.
Charlie Thompson was scheduled to be there, but had dental work done yesterday, so he was not feeling well today. I think we have all been in that boat.

I normally dislike the practice of people posting a diary for a candidate unless it's the candidate or someone working for the candidate that's posting it. I am not a candidate and I do not work for one.

How do you use daily kos?

Mon Jun 19, 2006 at 09:30:58 PM PDT

I've been a long time viewer of dailykos - I check the site throughout the day looking for new diaries and updates. I never go any further than reading the posts and maybe going to an external link, but it was during a conversation with my "room-mate" of 13 years tonight that I discovered a new "realm" of Kos. I have always known that there was a 'comments' section, but never understood the time and effort people put into their comments. My room-mate reads and posts in the comments, and was in disbelief that I had never read through them in any posts that I had read.

FIghting Dem-Charlie Thompson TX-05 on Majority Report tonight

Tue May 09, 2006 at 05:00:02 PM PDT

Forgive me if I have missed this, but my candidiate for US House Charlie Thompson will be on The Majority Report tonight.  Charlie is taking on Jeb Hensarling in the TX-05 district.

Charlie Thompson TX-05 & Kaufman County Texas Democrats

Sat Apr 22, 2006 at 01:29:06 PM PDT

I have often been critical of the local Democratic party for not being 'seen' in our community.  Today I had the opportunity to meet our new County Chair, Lisa Coleman and Charlie Thompson, candidate for Congressional seat TX-05 at the Terrell Heritage Jubilee.  I wasnt expecting a table for the Kaufman County Democrats, but big surprise.

Those open threads are few and far between

Mon Apr 17, 2006 at 06:58:08 PM PDT

I am against the death penalty.  However, I am having a hard time dealing with the death of Jamie Rose Bolin.  Shes the 10 year old girl from Oklahoma who was murdered by Kevin Underwood.

Can someone please explain to me why this monster should not be put to death?  I dont want to here he is insane.  I dont want to hear, that its just wrong. I can think of nothing that should spare this guys life.

500,000 March for immigration reform in Dallas

Sun Apr 09, 2006 at 04:47:27 PM PDT

I posted a comment in another diary, and was hoping someone would write a diary about todays megamarch in Dallas.

Today was a great day to be from Texas.  People of all backgrounds came together to march for Justice and Dignity for all US Immigrants.  Organizers had expected somewhere around 50,000 people.  The police are estimating a crowd of between 350,000 to 500,000. The largest march ever in Dallas.

Texas lawmakers need not claim amount of gifts

Sat Mar 25, 2006 at 04:08:31 PM PDT

I am not much into diarys.  I can't seem to get past the anger when I am typing and it always ends up being a rambling mess.  But, I will try again.

Who says that the Government is not paid for?  Try reading this and see if you dont get pissed.

Texas, Drudge, and the Republican Party

Mon Jan 02, 2006 at 10:52:51 AM PDT

I normally do not create diarys.  I am just not that good.  However, I need to vent somewhere before my head explodes.  This is just a story about a small county east of Dallas.  Our only claim to fame is Jamie Foxx and an election scandal that was ignored.

Please forgive me for any spelling errors or errors in grammer.  Like I said, I am just not that good.

FEMA overpaying for hotel rooms in NOLA by 300%

Mon Sep 26, 2005 at 07:05:40 PM PDT

This is a blog that I read about in a diary here right after Katrina hit.  The guys running the site have been great about updates and pics and have had a live cam on the streets of New Orleans since the hurricane hit.  Its worth checking out.  There is an entry in there from tonight that says FEMA is paying 300% above the standard room rate.

Terrell Texas, Katrina evacuees get buffaloed

Tue Sep 20, 2005 at 10:01:26 AM PDT

This is not much of a diary, but its not often our town gets a mention or credit for assisting the Katrina evacuees.  Tribes from Montana's Fort Belknap Indian Reservation are donating Buffalo meat to evacuees staying in Terrell, my home town.  The AP ran the story, so it may have been already wrote up here.  I do not agree with the discription that they people staying in Terrell are refugees as noted in the article, but thats a minor complaint.

Bush losing his base?

Sun Aug 07, 2005 at 09:43:01 AM PDT

In what I have been told is a Republican leaning group, Rasmussenreports.com shows W's approval level down to 47% for the second day in a row. It had been hovering around 49-51 but slowly has been going even further south. My only hope this is a sign the American People are looking at the big picture, and not just single issues to determine what kind of job W is doing. How many people have heard someone say I dont like Bush but I support the fight in Iraq, or something similar to that.

Has New York Times been hacked?

Fri Jul 29, 2005 at 06:24:03 AM PDT

Has www.nytimes.com been hacked?  Try going to their homepage.  It will redirect you to a Jothan Frakes web site.  It take a while to load.  Never seen this before.  Perhaps I am typing it in wrong.  The header says Dot Domain Name www.jothan.com (www.nytimes.com.  The picture of the guy is really creepy looking, and there is a link saying did you mean to go to the nytimes.com.  Takes you to a place that can not be displayed.

New GLBT Channel LOGO On the Air

Thu Jun 30, 2005 at 09:01:20 PM PDT

I haven't seen any outrage from the evangelical Christians yet, but I'm sure they can't be happy that a gay channel is now being offered as a regular part of their Satellite program package.

The new TV channel for gays and lesbians started today, and is being offered as a free channel included in one of the basic packages on DirecTV. This is a regular commercial station that is owned by Viacom and is offering original gay programming and also owns a vast catalog of gay and lesbian movies.

I've been watching tonight since the station began live broadcast at 8pm CST (in Texas, at least), and it is so different and refreshing as a gay male to see programs that show glimpses of my life and don't apologize or show shame for doing so. Tune in to channel 263 on DirecTv and check it out.

Fake applause

Tue Jun 28, 2005 at 05:38:23 PM PDT

ABC just said the appause that interupted the middle of Bushs spech was initiated by a member of the White House Aedvance Team. Wonder if anyone else is going to pick up on this?  Not really that big a deal, since it was a room full of military and they have certain codes of conduct they have to abide by.  But interesting that they thought they needed to add it.
